Mentorship Matters, But Sponsorship Changes Careers

Reflections from the Women in Tech Summit at ATxSG

Last week I had the privilege of attending Asia Tech x Singapore (ATxSG) ✨, and specifically the Women in Tech summit at Capella Singapore. Surrounded by tech leaders shattering barriers and driving impactful change, I left feeling energized - and reminded of how much work remains ahead of us.

The networking conversations were as valuable as the sessions themselves. There's something powerful about being in a room with people who understand both the possibilities and the obstacles, who've navigated similar paths and are willing to share the map.

Three insights landed hard for me.

Mentorship Opens Doors, Sponsorship Propels Careers

We talk a lot about mentorship in tech - and it matters. But sponsorship is what changes trajectories. 🌟

A mentor gives advice. A sponsor puts your name in the room when opportunities arise, advocates for your promotion, and uses their capital to open doors you didn't even know existed.

In competitive fields like ours, that distinction is everything. We need more leaders willing to spend their influence on the next generation.

Words Without Action Don't Move the Needle

It's easy to say your company values diversity. It's harder to back that up with policies and resources that actually support women's needs. 💪

Does your parental leave policy reflect real life? Do your promotion criteria account for non-linear career paths? Are you measuring representation at every level, not just entry points?

The companies making progress are the ones treating this as an operational priority, not a values statement.

We Rise Fastest When We Lift Each Other

The most consistent theme of the summit: support and uplift fellow women in tech. Together, we thrive. 🤝

That means celebrating wins, making introductions, sharing opportunities, and creating space for voices that aren't always heard. It means being intentional about building the community we want to see.

I'm grateful to the incredible role models and fellow WIT friends I connected with - your generosity and candor reminded me why this work matters.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

My heartfelt thanks to ATxSG, IMDA, and Singapore Computer Society for the invitation, and to all the trailblazing women and men in tech who shared their experiences so generously. 👏

Events like this don't just inspire - they equip us with the insights and connections to drive real change. I'm heading back to work with renewed energy and a longer list of people I want to sponsor, not just mentor.

Here's to building a tech industry where everyone can thrive. More soon. 🙏
