Mentorship Matters, but Sponsorship Changes Careers
Reflections from the Women in Tech Summit at ATxSG

Last week I had the privilege of attending Asia Tech x Singapore (ATxSG) ✨, and specifically the Women in Tech summit at Capella Singapore. I walked away inspired - not just by the trailblazing speakers, but by the honest, grounded conversations happening in every corner of the room.
Watching tech leaders share their journeys, their setbacks, and their wins reminded me why events like this matter. We weren't just networking. We were building the scaffolding for each other's next chapter.
Mentorship Is Important, but Sponsorship Is Critical
One theme surfaced again and again: mentorship opens doors, but sponsorship changes careers. 🌟
Mentors offer advice and perspective. Sponsors put your name in the room when opportunities arise - they advocate for your promotion, recommend you for high-visibility projects, and use their capital to accelerate your growth.
In competitive fields like tech, that distinction matters. We need both, but we talk far more about mentorship than we do about the active, sometimes risky work of sponsorship.
Words Need to Become Action
Another insight that landed: companies need to back their commitments with policies and resources that actually support women's needs. 💪
It's not enough to celebrate International Women's Day or publish a diversity report. Real change requires structural support - flexible work arrangements, equitable parental leave, transparent promotion criteria, and leadership pipelines that don't leak talent at every level.
The organizations that get this right don't just retain great people. They become magnets for the best talent.
We Thrive When We Lift Each Other
The most energizing part of the summit? The reminder that we rise faster when we support and uplift one another. 🤝
I left every conversation feeling more connected - to the incredible role models on stage, to my fellow WIT friends navigating similar challenges, and to the broader mission of building a tech industry that reflects the diversity of the people it serves.
Together, we can redefine what leadership looks like. Together, we can create the sponsorship culture that so many of us needed earlier in our careers.
Gratitude
My heartfelt thanks to ATxSG, IMDA, and Singapore Computer Society (SCS) for the invitation, and to every woman and man who shared their story on stage. 👏
Events like this don't just inspire - they equip us to go back into our organizations and be the sponsors, the advocates, and the allies our teams need.
More soon. 🙏
