Build to Impact: Reflections from AI Singapore's Student Developer Conference
What I learned moderating a room full of builders, dreamers, and future shapers
I had the honor of moderating today's SCS Women in Tech Chapter x AI Singapore Student Developer Conference 2026 - and to be in a room full of builders, dreamers, and future shapers. 🌟
Huge thanks to our speakers: Pei Fern Ng (AMD), Trudy Sih (Google), and Ai Kiar Ang (IBM) for sharing your journeys and insights so openly. And big love to my SCS Women in Tech Chapter mentoring sisters - Irene Lim, 林翠铃 PMP®, Cyndi Lum, Sarmista Mondol, Queenie Chan, and Rachel See Tho - for the planning and collaboration behind the scenes.
Here's what landed for me.
AI is an end-to-end journey
One of the most grounding reminders of the day: AI isn't just one thing. It's an entire ecosystem - from silicon and infrastructure, to cloud platforms and solutions, to real-world adoption. 👾
That means there are many roles in this journey. Engineers, data scientists, account managers, solution architects, designers, product thinkers, community builders - not just one "AI job."
If you're a student wondering where you fit, the answer is: there's room for you. Your unique perspective matters at every layer of the stack.
Mentorship and community matter
This was the throughline of the entire day. The right people help you see what's possible, keep you going, and open doors you didn't know existed. 👫
We ran a highly impactful speed-mentoring session, and I'm grateful for our powerhouse mentors who showed up: Irene Lim, 林翠铃 PMP®, Cyndi Lum, Daphne Ng, Ambreen Mahvash, Sarmista Mondol, Anita Tomar, Beatriz S., Rakhee Varshney, Mitra Tajrobehkar, PhD, and Vachara (Sherry) Jamkam (our amazing multi-tasker!).
Special appreciation to Kanchana Gupta, founder of vLookUp, for building such a mighty mentoring platform and for the generous mentoring, tips, and tricks you shared with the students. 🙏
Start where you are
To all the students in the room - and anyone reading this who's early in their AI journey: start where you are. 💻
A small project. A club. A hackathon. Even a thoughtful message to someone you look up to.
Don't wait until you feel "ready" or "perfect." The AI ecosystem needs your questions, creativity, and unique perspective - right now. And a gentle reminder to complete your "homework" from Kanchana! 😊
From build to impact
Thank you for being such a fantastic audience. Here's to your own journey from #BuildtoImpact. 💙
Days like this remind me why I do this work - because the future of AI is being shaped by the people in rooms like this one. And I'm honored to be part of that story, even in a small way.
More soon. 🙏
